Lidl Connect launches in Ireland

Lidl Connect launches in Ireland

Lidl is about to sell mobile service alongside the weekly shop. Its new Lidl Connect plan is due to launch in Ireland on Monday, 5 October 2026, with a striking offer: €8.99 a month for life for the first 100,000 customers who qualify by 31 December 2026, whichever comes first. After the launch offer, the published standard price is €12.99 a month. Lidl Connect describes a rolling monthly plan, and 1GLOBAL’s price list gives the standard rate.

On paper, I think this is one of the most interesting SIM-only launches in Ireland this year. The price is low, the included roaming allowance is useful, and you can keep your number. But I would check the signal where I actually live and work before moving my main number. I would also read “price for life” as a promise about this continuing subscription, rather than a price I could leave and reclaim later.

What do you get for €8.99?

The launch plan includes unlimited mobile data in Ireland, unlimited calls and texts within Ireland and to UK numbers, 50GB of roaming data in the EU/EEA, UK and certain other included countries, plus 100 minutes a month from Ireland to selected international destinations. It uses eir’s mobile network in Ireland, while the service contract is with Lidl’s telecoms partner, 1GLOBAL. These are Lidl’s stated allowances; the service has not launched yet, so I have not tested its performance. Lidl’s plan and FAQs and 1GLOBAL’s fair-use policy set out the details.

The €8.99 rate works out at €107.88 over 12 months if it stays active throughout. The standard €12.99 rate would be €155.88 over 12 months, a €48 difference. Those totals cover the plan alone; they do not include a handset or a physical SIM. The published price list says there is no activation or connection fee. If you choose a physical SIM, Lidl has said it will cost 99 cent in store; an eSIM is available through the app.

What does “price for life” actually mean?

The small print matters more than the slogan. Under 1GLOBAL’s terms, the protected price applies while your qualifying subscription continues on that plan. If you cancel and later sign up again, you do not get the original offer back. You can also lose it if your Lidl Plus account is permanently deleted and that ends the mobile service. The terms set out other loss conditions, including certain serious contract breaches.

The promotional rate is limited to one line per Lidl Plus account. The supplied Lidl advert says you may add up to three further SIMs at €12.99 each per month. The advert also says the launch offer ends when the first 100,000 customers have joined or on 31 December 2026, whichever happens first. I would confirm the exact promotional price and eligibility in the Lidl Plus checkout before paying. The public standard price list shows €12.99, not the limited €8.99 offer.

You are not tied to a fixed 12- or 24-month term. The bundle renews monthly, and 1GLOBAL’s terms say you can cancel without an exit penalty before the next renewal. That flexibility is welcome, although leaving means giving up the protected launch price. 1GLOBAL terms.

The practical checks before you move

Coverage comes first. Lidl Connect runs on eir’s network, so start with Lidl’s coverage map. A map cannot tell you exactly what reception will be like in a particular kitchen, office or train carriage. If eir coverage has been weak in the places that matter to you, the lower price may not compensate. Lidl says Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE are supported on compatible phones, which may help indoors, but I would still test the connection before relying on it.

You need the Lidl Plus app. Signup, activation, payment and ongoing management happen there. You need an active Lidl Plus account and a valid payment method in Lidl Pay. Lidl says you can choose an eSIM or buy a physical SIM, and you can bring your Irish mobile number or take a new one. If you are moving from bill pay, have your account number ready. Your phone must be unlocked and compatible. Lidl Connect FAQs; Lidl Plus terms.

Do not assume “unlimited” follows you everywhere. The domestic data allowance is unlimited, but roaming data stops at 50GB per month in the included travel zone. More unusually, 1GLOBAL’s fair-use policy says Lidl Connect calls, texts and data will not work outside that zone. If you depend on receiving bank verification texts while travelling to the US, India or another destination outside it, check your travel setup before switching your main number. The 100 international minutes for calls from Ireland to selected countries are a different benefit; they do not mean the SIM roams in those countries.

Check your existing contract. If your current plan includes handset repayments or an unexpired minimum term, compare the remaining cost before porting your number. Lidl’s low SIM price will not erase what you still owe another provider. If you want to keep your number, start the porting process in the Lidl Plus app rather than simply cancelling the old number first. 1GLOBAL says activation can take up to 24 hours after the necessary steps are complete.

Would I switch?

If I already owned an unlocked phone, paid more than €8.99 for SIM-only service and knew eir coverage worked well for me, I would seriously consider Lidl Connect. The monthly flexibility makes trying it less daunting. I would use a spare or dual-SIM phone first if I had one, then move my main number once calls, data and the apps I rely on worked reliably in my usual places.

I would hesitate if I regularly travel outside Lidl’s supported roaming countries, depend on a specialist calling or SMS service, or have poor eir reception. Those are real reasons to keep a more expensive plan. For everyone else, the first step on 5 October is simple: open Lidl Plus, check the live offer and contract summary, confirm that the €8.99 rate is actually available to you, and only then decide whether to port your number.
